Amy Macdonald - Founder and CEO of Under a Tree Consulting

Amy is a 30-year veteran of both the spa and hospitality industries. In that time, she has had many great accomplishments, including most recently being recognized as the #1 Spa Consultant in 2016, nominated by professionals in her industry through American Spa Magazine.

Amy has led numerous clients achieve remarkable success in the wellness and hospitality arenas, making Amy McDonald a widely recognized innovator in transformational health andwellness programming. For example, in December 2016, Amy and her team designed a retreat for Le Guanahaniin St. Bart’s to better position them within the wellness market. This led Le Guanahani’s “Essence to Essence” to be acclaimed asone of the Best Retreats for 2017 by CNN. Another client, Chablé Resortin Merida, Mexico, was chosen as one of the Best Spas of the Year for 2016 by Spa Opportunities. Due to these successes and others, Amy is recognized as an expert in merging resort hospitality and urban healthcare into integrated wellness models.

After years of managing several award-winning properties, Amy followed her passion to create sustainable, authentic spa experiences from the ground up through her own company, Under a Tree. Working with a diverse blend of seasoned industry experts, Amy leads teams through concept development and execution on an array of projects with global hospitality brands such as Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts and Starwood Capital Group;wellness destination spas such as Mii amoand Rancho La Puerta;and unique healthcare facilities like California Health and Longevity Institute (CHLI), Well & Being and Intermountain Healthcare Group.Herbreadth of spa proficiencies includes conceptual and strategic planning, design, the creation of menu and educational programs and activities, marketing initiative, and signature product and organic amenity line development.

Her consultancy, Under a Tree, has diverse experience working with geothermal properties, including working with Ojo Caliente Mineral Spring and Spa, Sunrise Springs Wellness Resort and Two Bunch Palms Mineral Springs Hotel. They have also worked with internationally based hot springs clients such as Hotel Matilda In Mexico and 51° in Switzerland. From this depth of experience, she was named Chair of the Global Hot Springs Initiative for the Global Wellness Institute, and has led this group of industry experts over the last 3 years in a variety of research projects, including co-authoring the 2015 User Guide for Hot Springs.

Prior to starting her consultancy, Amy's spa and hospitality management experience included roles as Spa and Program Director at the innovative luxury eco-resort El Monte Sagrado Living Spa in Taos, New Mexico; and as Director of Spa and Programs for the award-winning Miraval Resort and Spa, in Tucson, Arizona. Earlier, while residing in Mexico, she was the General Manager of Rancho Leonero, a small resortnorth of Cabo San Lucas. She was also influential in developing a spa on the island of Vieques in Puerto Rico for Rosewood Hotels and Resorts.

Amy’s accomplishments have received acclaim in such publications as Travel and Leisure and Conde Nast Traveler while her personal expertise has been cited in O, The Oprah Magazine, Harper's Bazaar, and Real Simple among others. She is also a frequent guest speaker on spa trends, sustainability and marketing techniques.

Fluent in English with a passion for Spanish, Amy is a native Canadian and has lived for 17 years in the US, 10 years in Mexico, and several years between the Bahamas, Greece and Morocco. She is currently Based in Tucson, Arizona, USA.
